Drive Route 9 through the Manahawkin Historical District on a Saturday morning and it still reads like the town you know. Now drive four minutes to the corner of Route 72 and South Main. The new ShopRite anchors one side. A nearly 20,000 square foot library is going up on the other. That is not a coincidence. It is the shape of Manahawkin's fall.
If you have lived here a while, the interesting question this season is not what to do. It is where. Because the map has shifted, and the weekend rotation most residents were running two years ago now skips half the town.
The Move South Is Not Subtle
Two anchors tell the story. The Manahawkin ShopRite left its longtime Route 72 East footprint and opened its new store at 733 Route 72 West on the old K-Mart site with a ribbon cutting on February 4, 2026. At 116,000 square feet, it is bigger than the store it replaced, and Saker's CEO Richard Saker made a point of the locally sourced and prepared foods program when the store opened.
The Ocean County Library Stafford Branch closed its 129 North Main Street location on May 1, 2026 after decades on that block. The replacement, at 179 South Main Street next to the Ocean County Southern Service Center, is a 19,700 square foot standalone building, 65 percent larger than the old one, with a teen room, a sensory space, study rooms, and a STEAM maker area. The county awarded a $9,488,700 construction contract to Newport Construction Management, backed by a $4,824,000 New Jersey Library Construction Bond grant. Director Susan Quinn has framed the summer 2026 opening as the "next chapter" for the branch.
Two civic anchors, both on the south end, both opened or opening in the same calendar year. That is what a downtown migration looks like when it happens in a shore town.
A Weekend Built On The New Map
Here is a Friday-to-Sunday rotation that uses what is actually open right now, not what used to be.

Nothing on that grid was possible in this configuration eighteen months ago. That is the point.
The Eating Rotation Has Two New Names
El Rinconcito De Mexico opened inside the Manahawkin Mart Shoppes plaza at 657 East Bay Avenue and it is not another taco-and-burrito shop. The Patch write-up flagged the family-owned kitchen for buche, pork and beef head, tripa, alambres, tortas, and huaraches alongside the al pastor and grilled chicken most local menus stop at. Birria tacos are on the board. If your Saturday-night default has been the same Route 72 pizza rotation for a decade, this is the one addition that actually breaks the pattern.
The second is not open yet. Salad House, the chain launched by Springfield native Joey Cioffi in Millburn in 2011, signed a lease for a Manahawkin Plaza location according to Daunno Realty Services. The nearest existing store is Toms River, which opened in May 2023, so this is the first time the chain lands south of the Parkway split in Ocean County. Worth watching if you want a bowl-and-wrap option that is not a national fast-casual name.
Stage Nights On McKinley Avenue
The Stafford Township Arts Center at 1000 McKinley Avenue has quietly become the reason you do not need to drive to Red Bank or Atlantic City for a Saturday-night ticket. The fall calendar as booked by SF Entertainment:
- September 19, 2026, 7:30 PM — SF Entertainment show
- October 4, 2026, 3:00 PM — Fall Oldies 2026 (matinee)
- October 24, 2026, 7:30 PM — Cher Tribute
- November 14, 2026, 7:30 PM — Celebrating Celine
That is one confirmed weekend show per month straight through Thanksgiving. Full schedule at SF Entertainment. The 3:00 PM Sunday slot on October 4 is the one to note if you have kids or parents in town — matinee bookings at STAC are the exception, not the rule.
The Wine Festival Weekend
The Stafford Fall Harvest & Wine Festival runs at Heritage Park on Route 72, and the lineup published by New Jersey Wine Events is heavier than most Ocean County festivals of this scale. Pouring wineries include Tomasello, Valenzano, Villari, Plagido's, DiMatteo, Angelico, Wagonhouse, and Chestnut Run Farm. Food trucks on the roster are Cubano Express, Meatwagon, and Station One Seafood. Live music from 99 Reasons on Saturday and Local Honey on Sunday. Admission runs $20 advance or $25 at the gate, cash only.
Sampler Admission includes wine glass, sampling and sales of many New Jersey wines.
The reason to plan around it: this is the one weekend where the south-end civic buildings, Heritage Park, and the McKinley Avenue arts campus all pull crowds at the same time. Park at the arts center lot and walk.
Walk It Off, But Pick The Right Trail
Three options, all inside Stafford Township, all different characters. Choosing between them is the local-knowledge move.
Manahawkin Lake Park, at Route 9 and North Lakeshore Drive, is the flat, family walking track. Bike trail, pavilion, playground, and a gazebo with the bridge over to Rita's on North Main. The Stafford Historical Society's Summer Concert Series runs Monday evenings 6:30 to 8:30 PM here through August. If you want to log a mile before dinner without driving anywhere, this is it.
Manahawkin Wildlife Management Area covers 973.5 acres, and the Stafford Avenue route runs 3.8 miles. This is where you go when Lake Park is too short and too crowded. Fall foliage reads better here than at the lake because the canopy is deeper.
Stafford Forge Ponds, technically just over the line but inside the same trail system, is a 3.4 mile loop in the Pinelands National Reserve along dammed Westecunk Creek. The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference notes the tradeoff plainly: hunters frequent the area in the fall, and hunting is prohibited on Sundays. If you want the Pines-and-water hike in October or November, make it a Sunday walk. AllTrails users have flagged unmarked paths and sandy roads, so bring a map, not just a phone.
Three trails, three different weekends, one town.
What Actually Changed
Read the fall calendar back to back and the pattern is hard to miss. The grocery run is on Route 72 West now. The library run is on South Main. The show tickets are on McKinley. The best new restaurant sits on East Bay in the Manahawkin Mart Shoppes plaza, not on Route 9. The old Stone Store reconstruction near Manahawkin Lake is still there, and the Monday concerts still happen at the lake, but the daily-life center of gravity has slid a mile south and a half mile west of where it was in 2023.
For anyone who has lived here through the last two years of construction dust on Route 72, that is the payoff. The town is not becoming a different place. It is finishing a move it started a while ago.
